Value for money: 6/10
Service: 8/10
Overall: 7/10

Tsu at JW Marriott Bangkok has long been one of family's favourite sushi bar. You can almost guarantee high quality of freshness of sea products here, of course cannot be matched with those from Tsukiji Fish Market in Tokyo. Tsu is located on the ground floor of JW Marriott Bangkok. It offers various types of traditional Japanese cuisine, which are simply classic, as well as great sushi and sashimi. The decor is in modern Japanese style with sushi bar, which can accommodate around 10 guests. There is also a reception bar for those who love alcohol. While the atmosphere is friendly, services from staffs are also tremendous: each staff is polite and helpful. Additionally, travelling to Tsu is also convenient as it is located closed by BTS stations (Ploenchit Station and Nana Station). There is also a parking valet service available for those who drive in.

Menu

In case sushi bar is chosen to be the choice, Grilled Ginkgo with Salt and Assorted Seaweed will always be served as complementary.

The first to arrive was Chu-toro (Medium Fatty Tuna Belly). It was tender, fatty, and juicy, which could be melt in the mouth, but the minor presence of fishy odour let it down (6/10).

Next was Hamachi (Yellow Tail). Again the fish was fresh and tender with fat marble and taste of sweetness. However, the quality was still a little under that of Honmono (7/10).

This was followed by Kampachi (Amberjack) which is in the same family as Hamachi. Even though the flesh was firmer than Hamachi but it was still fresh and sweet. The flavour was indeed more intense (7/10).

The chef then chose to serve Shima-aji (White Trevally). This fish really gave scent of the sea. Not accounting for creativeness of sushi at Honmono, Shima-aji at Tsu could be compared side-by-side (7/10).

Sake (Salmon) was also a great choice at Tsu. Fat lining made it tender and juicy. This was a simple choice of sushi but something should not be missed (7/10).

Next inline was Tai Nigiri (Sea Bream) and Suzuki Sashimi (Sea Bass). Texture of these white fish were soft with delicate sweet aroma. The flavour was concentrate (7/10).

Engawa Nigiri (Fatty Part of Halibut) and Hokkigai Sashimi (Surf Calm) were not spectacular and light in taste (6/10).

Ikura Gunkanmaki (Salmon Roe) was smooth and light. It was also fresh but little salty from soy sauce marination (6/10).

Last piece was Unagi (Freshwater Eel) which was grilled with Tare sauce, which was mainly made out of Sake, Soy Sauce, and Sugar. The aroma was sweet and having hint of spice. While the texture was a combination of fluffiness, rubbery, and toughness. A pleasant dish definitely (7/10).

Unagi Nigiri

To finish off, the chef served Negi-toro Maki (Fatty Tuna Chopped with Spring Onion) with Tamago (Sweet Omelette). Negi-toro was great and pleasant (7/10). Tamago was rather firm, I personally would prefer it soft, otherwise a great dish (6/10).

The meal was then touched up with Soup with Assorted Mushrooms, Melon, and Matcha. Indeed, a refresh way to finish the meal.

Despite lack of chef's skill since the departure of Arjarn Bantun, Tsu still maintains its quality of fish and shells. We are looking forward to improvement in creativity and idea of sushi as well as quality of raw fish on our next visit. Tsu is indeed a must try restaurant.

Below is my quick comment from my recent visit (posted on 10 February 2011)

On 4th February 2011, I had a chance to revisit Tsu @ JW Marriott, Bangkok. However, it was a truly disappointment. Perhaps, it was because the restaurant has been lacked of quality chefs on sushi counter, I felt that the quality of sushi was not as good as it used to be. Additionally, the quality of service was rather poor comparing to the standard for this restaurant and there was no consistency in quality for each piece of sushi. Unfortunately I did not have a chance to take photo. Nevertheless, I would re-score each category for Tsu as follows:

Food: 7/10
Sushi: 5/10
Atmosphere: 7/10
Value for money: 4/10
Service: 6/10
Overall: 5/10

I shall post further full review of this restaurant when I have a chance to next visit.
